The Postgraduate Program in Nursing – Master – (PPGENF) is based on the Alfredo Pinto Nursing School premises, which was named in the nineteenth century (1890) as the Professional School of Nurses. In 2018, the educational institution completed 128 years old and since 1980 it counts with PPGENF (Resolution No. 209 of December 16, 1980), as a Master's Degree in Nursing (CME). The first Regulation happened in 1981 and its CAPES accreditation in 1989 (Opinion No. 813 of October 30, 1989), being the first Postgraduate Program at the Federal University of the State of Rio de Janeiro/UIRIO.

It is worth mentioning that the insertion of the current PPGENF is due to the Alfredo Pinto Nursing School insertion into the current educational institution by Decree-Law No. 773 of August 20, 1969, called Isolated Schools Federation of the State of Guanabara (FEFIEG). Due to the sociopolitical and social context from the states of Guanabara and Rio de Janeiro merger, in 1975, the University has renamed the Isolated Schools Federation of the State of Rio de Janeiro (FEFIERJ). Four years later (1979), by Law No. 6,655, FEFIERJ was institutionalized with the name of University of Rio de Janeiro (UNIRIO). It was in this scenario that the creation and names change of the university where PPGENF was created. Furthermore, we emphasize that on October 24th, 2003, through Law 10,750, the name of the University was changed to the Federal University of the State of Rio de Janeiro, maintaining the acronym UNIRIO.

This is a pioneering Postgraduate Program at UNIRIO that continues searching for knowledge advances in favor of Nursing and Health knowledge, maintaining the vanguard tradition as a pioneer in the teaching institution combined with the responsibility in the nurses training by the secular School in favor of Brazilian Nursing.
