The "stricto sensu" Postgraduate Program in Law (PPGD) of the Federal University of the State of Rio de Janeiro (UNIRIO) is a higher education course for those who have completed a degree in Law or related Social Sciences, with the general objective of producing qualified scientific knowledge within the legal sciences in its single area of concentration "Law and Public Policies". Currently, the PPGD-UNIRIO offers the Academic Master's Course in Law and is evaluating the proposal to open the Academic Doctorate Course in Law.
The PPGD-UNIRIO aims to train academic researchers with specific theoretical skills in the interface between Law and Public Policies. The students are expected to undertake in-depth studies that will generate a critical and socially engaged profile, as well as to be included in teaching or academic or professional research activities in other legal or non-legal careers that involve the formulation, execution or control of government actions, in order to contribute to the application of scientific knowledge in public or private institutions, translating it into a contribution to society.
To this end, students in the program will receive training through the completion of various theoretical disciplines and academic activities that contribute to their training as researchers in the field, allowing them to understand the role of legal science within the area of public policies and to foster improvements in the state of the art in the field through their research. This involves an approach to the institute, category or norm, whether in the field of theory, dogma or legal practice, in light of public policies, whether theoretically or based on empirical study.
The PPGD-UNIRIO is located in an annex building within the Center for Legal and Political Sciences (CCJP) located at Rua Voluntários da Pátria, 107 - Botafogo - Rio de Janeiro (RJ) - CEP 22270-000. Its structure includes facilities such as classrooms, a meeting room, an administrative management room, a mini-auditorium, as well as the shared structure of the Center itself, such as the sector library, the computer lab, the auditorium, among others. Currently, the Historic Mansion is being renovated and will be the future and expanded facilities of the Program.
As authorized by the regulatory body for postgraduate studies in Brazil (CAPES), the Master's Degree is offered only during the day with in-person and remote activities, concentrating its pedagogical teaching activities in the morning and afternoon shifts and being open to the assistance of faculty, students, alumni and the community in person at the administrative team's on-call desks, as well as via email.
