◉ CONSERVATION AND SUSTAINABILITY

This research line encompasses the analysis of Brazil’s biological and cultural mega-diversity conservation based on critical reflections about nature conservation strategies within the national political agenda. In addition, it addresses theoretical-methodological parameters, with emphasis on the incorporation of sustainability dimensions in public policy elaboration, implementation and evaluation processes focused on the technical-scientific improvement of decision-making, mainly of that - directly and indirectly - associated with Ecotourism activity. It also proposes strategies to contribute to the use of technical data, scientific evidence and ethical principles by political and social processes to strengthen instruments, such as environmental impacts’ assessment, strategic environmental assessment and environmental risks’ analysis, to help minimizing the socio-environmental conflicts produced by several sectoral policies.

◉ MANAGEMENT OF PROTECTED AREAS

This research line, which looks inside protected areas, encompasses the application and development of Ecotourism planning, handling and management methods and techniques applied to several protected-area categories in Brazil. Research and analysis of the dynamics and interactions of protected areas’ creation and management with Ecotourism activities, with natural and cultural heritage conservation, and with the appreciation of traditional knowledge and environmental education practices. It proposes alternatives to improve the legal and institutional framework in compliance with the environmental complexity and sociocultural diversity observed in conservation units, indigenous lands and quilombola territories.
