Prof_André Scarambone Zaú     André Scarambone Zaú

Professor at Federal University of Rio de Janeiro State (UNIRIO - Universidade Federal do Estado do Rio de Janeiro); PhD in Botany, with emphasis on Ecology and Biodiversity Conservation (JBRJ/2010); Master’s degree in Science/Geography, with emphasis on Landscape Ecology (UFRJ/1994); Bachelor and Major Degree in Biological Sciences (USU/1987). Professor of the Post-Graduation Program in Ecotourism and Conservation (PPGEC) (Professional Master’s Degree course, UNIRIO), where he teaches disciplines such as “Ecotourism and Conservation”, “Ecological Restoration” and “Nature Conservation”. Professor at undergraduate courses in Biological Sciences, Environmental Sciences, Major Degree in Biological Sciences and Biomedicine at UNIRIO, where he teaches disciplines such as “Basic Ecology”, “Conservation Biology”, “Field techniques in terrestrial ecological studies” “Plant ecology” and “Biodiversity”. He works as Visiting Professor at the Doctoral course in Environmental Education and Culture, at La Amazonia University, Colombia, where he teaches the discipline “Biodiversity conservation, natural resources’ management and quantitative analysis methods”. He develops research in the Ecology and Biodiversity Conservation, Ecological Restoration and Ecotourism fields. He is member of UNIRIO Research Chamber, in addition to participate in the Structuring Teaching Certer (NDE - Núcleo Docente Estruturante) by reformulating and updating the Bachelor’s Degree course in Biological Sciences.

Prof_Betina Koslowsky Suzuki     Betina Kozlowsky Suzuki

Major Degree in Biological Sciences, with Bachelor Degree in Ecology, at Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (1995); Master’s Degree in Ecology at Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (1998); and PhD in Chemical Ecology & Ecotoxicology at University of Lund, Sweden (2004). Associate Professor III at the Ecology and Marine Resources’ Department of Federal University of Rio de Janeiro State, where she works in teaching, research, extension and internationalization fields and where she coordinated the Bachelor’s Degree course in Biological Sciences from 2013 to 2016. She has experience in the Ecology field, based on using experimental and observational approaches, as well as in meta-analysis. She works in coastal aquatic ecosystems, as well as in hydroelectric and public supply reservoirs, with emphasis on effects of human pressures, such as the ones resulting from artificial eutrophication processes and from lack of basic sanitation involving potentially harmful species. She works as researcher in, as well as in the internationalization of, the Tropical Water Research Alliance (TWRA) between Brazil and Australia, which aims at promoting a multidisciplinary and integrated approach to the research, management and conservation of tropical watersheds. She worked in the Biogas Group of the Thematic Studies Department at the time she was in academic mobility at University of Linköping, Sweden and, nowadays, she participates in research projects aimed at bioenergy and biofertilizer production from organic waste by applying the concept of circular economy.

Prof_Camila Maria dos Santos Moraes     Camila Maria dos Santos Moraes

Coordinator of the Post-Graduation Program in Social Memory (PPGMS/UNIRIO). Adjunct Professor at the Tourism and Heritage Department of Federal University of Rio de Janeiro State (UNIRIO), where she works in the Bachelor’s Degree course in Tourism, in the Major Degree course in Social Sciences and in Post-Graduation Programs in Ecotourism and Conservation (PPGEC – Programa de Pós-Graduação em Ecoturismo e Conservação) and Social Memory (PPGMS - Programa de Pós-Graduação em Memória Social). She graduated in Tourism at UNIRIO, she holds specialist degree in Urban Sociology and Master’s Degree in Social Sciences at UERJ. During her doctorate studies in History, Politics and Cultural Assets at the Center for Research and Documentation of Contemporary Brazilian History at Getúlio Vargas Foundation (CPDOC / FGV-RJ), she performed research internship at the Center for Mobilities Research / Lancaster University, United Kingdom, when she turned her research into tourism studies within the broader field of mobility studies. She is Tutor at the Tutorial Education Program (PET / MEC), Tourism Observatory of Rio de Janeiro State, where she coordinates the TurisData Program: Database on Tourism and Mobility Studies and the Observatory of Tourism in Slums. She is also coordinator of Project “Intelligent Destination has memory and history: mobilizing community-based tourism in Rocinha” (funded by FAPERJ); Co-Investigator of the Projects “Lockdown Stories” (funded by Global Challenges Research Fund (GCRF) / Leicester University) and “Local Heritage and Sustainability: promoting reflection and sharing within and across communities” (funded by AHRC International Network: Pathways to Impact), where she has been developing - together with residents, local guides, activists and cultural producers - narratives about, and virtual tours in, Rio de Janeiro’s slums.

Prof_Carlos Augusto Assumpção de Figueiredo     Carlos Augusto Assumpção de Figueiredo (Coordinator)

Associate Professor at Federal University of Rio de Janeiro State - UNIRIO, linked to the Professional Master’s Degree in Ecotourism and Conservation – PPGEC - where he teaches the discipline “Planning and Management Techniques Applied to Ecotourism and to the Conservation of Natural Areas” and “Protected Areas and Environmental Legislation”. He also teaches disciplines such as “Environmental Management”, “Environmental Expertise”, “Biogeography”, “Animal Biology II” (fish) and Conservation Biology (Master’s Degree). He was coordinator of the Bachelor’s Degree course in Environmental Sciences at UNIRIO, he worked in the Major Degree course in Biology and in the Post-Graduation Program in Neotropical Biodiversity - PPGBIO. He graduated in Biological Sciences (Ecology Modality) at Federal University of Rio de Janeiro - UFRJ (1992), he holds Master’s Degree in Biological Sciences (Zoology) - National Museum/UFRJ (1997) and PhD in Biological Sciences (Zoology) at University of São Paulo - USP (2003). He has academic experience in the Zoology field, with emphasis on Phylogenetic Systematics, where she mainly works with the following topics: ichthyology, phylogenetic systematics and taxonomy. He has extensive professional and teaching experience in broader environmental issues, and he mainly works with the following topics: biodiversity, nature conservation units, environmental impact assessment, environmental expertise and environmental management. From 2019 to 2020, he performed post-doctoral internship in ecotourism scientometrics and community-based tourism at the Center for Studies in Geography and Spatial Planning (CEGOT - Centro de Estudos em Geografia e Ordenamento do Território) at University of Coimbra, Coimbra City, Portugal. He is currently participating in the Internationalization Project of the Post-Graduation Program in Ecotourism and Conservation at UNIRIO, in partnership with CEGOT and with University of Coimbra. Prof_César Luis Siqueira Junior     César Luis Siqueira Junior

Major Degree in Biological Sciences at Darcy Ribeiro Northern Rio de Janeiro State University (1999); he holds Master’s Degree in Biosciences and Biotechnology at Darcy Ribeiro Northern Rio de Janeiro State University (2001) and PhD in Biosciences and Biotechnology at Darcy Ribeiro Northern Rio de Janeiro State University (2007). Nowadays, he is associate professor and Director of the Biosciences Institute at Federal University of Rio de Janeiro State. He coordinates the Agricultural Systems Research Center (NuPSA - Núcleo de Pesquisa em Sistemas Agrícolas) and the Laboratory of Plant Protein Biochemistry and Function. He works in the Applied Botany field, with emphasis on Plant Defense System, mainly on the following topics: plant defense, natural compounds with fungicidal and antimicrobial activity, plant compounds’ phytotoxicity, and pharmacological potential of plant proteins.

Prof_Daniel Fonseca de Andrade     Daniel Fonseca de Andrade

He has Major and Bachelor’s Degree in Biological Sciences at University of São Paulo (1996), Master’s Degree in Environmental Science at London South Bank University (2000), and PhD in Environmental Science at the Post-Graduation Program in Environmental Science (PROCAM) at USP/SP (2013), in partnership (sandwich doctorate) with the Environmental Studies’ School of University of York, Toronto. He is Adjunct Professor at the Environmental Sciences Department of the Biosciences Institute, at Federal University of Rio de Janeiro State – UNIRIO. He is member of the Protected Areas Management research line at PPGEC. His research interests are linked to the development, monitoring and evaluation of public policies (plans, programs and projects, among others) focused on environmental education for conservation units and their surroundings, on the creation of environmental pedagogical practices for conservation units and their surroundings, and on the creation of environmental pedagogical practices based on indigenous, quilombola, riverside, caiçara or other non-Western cultures. His preferential research methods lie on participatory approaches and on interactions with other subjects based on complexity, dialogue and knowledge ecology theories. Paulo Freire, Boaventura de Souza Santos, David Bohm, Carlos Rodrigues Brandão and Marcos Sorrentino are some of his reference authors.

Prof_Deusana Maria da Costa Machado     Deusana Maria da Costa Machado

Major Degree in Geology at Federal University of Pará (1986), Master’s Degree in Geology at Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (1990) and PhD in Geosciences at Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (1999), with sandwich period at Claude Bernard Lyon-1 University, Lyon (FR). Nowadays, she works as Full Professor at Federal University of Rio de Janeiro State. He has experience in the Geosciences field, with emphasis on Paleontology, Heritage and Education. She mainly works with the following topics: Geodiversity and biodiversity patrimonialization; Symbolic heritage appropriation by social agents in protected areas; Heritage education; Bivalve phylogeny and systematics; and Paleozoic communities. She is member of PPGEC’s permanent body, which is integrated to the research line “Management of Protected Areas”.  Prof_Eloise Silveira Botelho     Eloise Silveira Botelho

Associate Professor at the Tourism and Heritage Department and permanent professor at the Post-Graduation Program in Ecotourism and Conservation (PPGEC), Federal University of Rio de Janeiro State (UNIRIO). She has PhD in Management of Social Initiatives at the Post-Graduation Program in Production Engineering, Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (2018), as well as Master’s Degree in Communities, Development, Environment and Social Inclusion at the EICOS Program, UFRJ (2009). She has Major Degree in Tourism (2004) and holds specialist certificate in Environmental Education at Federal University of Juiz de Fora (2006). Her main research agendas comprise partnerships in protected areas; community-based tourism in protected areas; services’ management and operation in protected areas; use of heritage in public spaces, as well as in leisure and tourism places in cities. She coordinates the Research Group “Observatório de Parcerias em Áreas Protegidas OPAP” [Observatory of Partnerships in Protected Areas] and collaborates with research groups registered at UNIRIO, UFRJ and USP, where she develops teaching, research and extension projects. She is member of the team of editors and reviewers of several scientific journals, such as Caderno Virtual de Turismo (CVT).

Prof_Laura Sinay     Laura Sinay

Professor of the Post-Graduation Program and of the Professional Master’s Degree in Ecotourism and Conservation at Federal University of Rio de Janeiro State - UNIRIO. Member of the World Commission on Protected Areas of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). Graduated in Tourism at Hélio Alonso Integrated Faculties, Brazil (1998); Master’s Degree in Community Psychosociology and Social Ecology at Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (2002); PhD in Natural and Tourism Resource Management at University of Queensland, Australia (2008), and Post-Doctorate Degree in Political Geography at Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (2009-2010). Nowadays, she is adjunct professor of the Environmental Sciences Department at the Biosciences Institute, UNIRIO, where she teaches in undergraduate courses such as Tourism, Biology and Environmental Sciences. She coordinates the Parks’ teaching, research and extension project. She has published a book about Environmental Management by Interciencia Editing House, as well as several articles focused on investigating issues associated with sustainability. She coordinated participatory processes for the elaboration of strategies focused on the sustainability of several nature conservation units, such as Galápagos National Park (Ecuador). Her main activity fields comprise the planning and management of tourism and of natural and/or traditionally inhabited areas, and environmental education.

She graduated in Biological Sciences – Bachelor’s Degree at Gama Filho University (1977), Major Degree in Biological Sciences at Gama Filho University (1977), Bachelor’s Degree in Marine Biology at Maria Thereza Integrated Faculties (1979), Improvement in Biological Physics and Chemistry at Federal University of Rio de Janeiro State (1981), Specialization in Higher Education Didactics at Gama Filho University (1983) and in Environmental Analysis and Assessment at Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro (1993), Master’s Degree in Environmental Sciences at Estácio de Sá University (1997) and PhD in Geology (area of concentration - Paleontology and Stratigraphy) at Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (2002). Nowadays, she is Associate Professor IV at Federal University of Rio de Janeiro State, where she develops research in the Geomicrobiology field. She has experience in the Environment and Botany field, with emphasis on Systematics, and she mainly works with the following topics: micro and macroalgae, microbial mats, stromatolites and other carbonate biogenic structures. Prof_Luciano Neves dos Santos     Luciano Neves dos Santos

He holds Degree in Oceanography at Rio de Janeiro State University (1997), Master’s Degree in Environmental and Forestry Sciences at Federal Rural University of Rio de Janeiro (2002), and PhD in Ecology of Continental Aquatic Environments at State University of Maringá (2008), with 18-month sandwich internship at the Aquatic Ecology Institute (IEA - Institut d’Ecologia Aquàtica (I) at Girona University (Spain). He was a post-doctorate fellowship holder at Northern Rio de Janeiro State University, in 2009; nowadays, he is adjunct professor II of the Ecology and Marine Resources Department (DERM - Departamento de Ecologia e Recursos Marinhos), at Federal University of Rio de Janeiro State (UNIRIO). He coordinates the Laboratory of Theoretical and Applied Ichthyology (LICTA - Laboratório de Ictiologia Teórica a Aplicada) and the research group “Diagnóstico, Conservação e Manejo da Ictiofauna Neotropical: Processos Ecológicos e Evolutivos” [Diagnosis, Conservation and Management of Neotropical Ichthyofauna: Ecological and Evolutionary Processes]. He is professor of the permanent and current nucleus (since November 2012) and coordinated the Post-Graduation Program in Neotropical Biodiversity (PPGBIO) at UNIRIO from 2012 to 2014 (current vice-coordinator). He has experience in the Ecology of Aquatic Environments field, with emphasis on the management and conservation of fishery resources; he mainly works with the following topics: artificial reefs, species-habitat interactions (natural and artificial), invasive species, predator-prey interactions, sampling methods, abiotic variables and biostatistics.

Prof_Luiza Corral Martins de Oliveira Ponciano     Luiza Corral Martins de Oliveira Ponciano

She is Associate Professor at Federal University of Rio de Janeiro State and permanent professor at the Professional Master’s Degree in Ecotourism and Conservation (PPGEC). She holds PhD and Master’s Degree in Geology at Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, as well as Bachelor’s and Major Degree in Biological Sciences at Federal University of Rio de Janeiro State. She has experience in the Geosciences, Biosciences and Museology fields, with emphasis on invertebrate taphonomy, tapofacies’ featuring and paleoenvironmental reconstruction (Parnaíba, Amazonas and Paraná River basins), Geological and Paleontological Heritage, as well as on the promotion of Geosciences, Geoethics, Cultural Paleontology, Geomythology, Geopoetics and other interfaces between Geosciences and Arts. She participated in the elaboration and assembly of several Paleontology exhibitions at the National Museum/UFRJ, in the Mobile Science Project at the Life Museum/FIOCRUZ and at Ibirapuera Park/Pavilion - SP. She also works with the elaboration of paleontological heritage salvage projects, initiatives focused on the geoconservation of Brazilian geological and paleontological sites, and lectures on Paleontology, Geology and Geological Heritage. She teaches disciplines such as Geology & Paleontology II, General Paleontology, Geology and Paleontology Fundamentals, Natural Heritage and Geological Heritage Conservation. She coordinates the Applied Taphonomy and Paleoecology Laboratory - LABTAPHO and the GeoTales group, whose aim is to promote Geosciences through artistic performances based on stories written in prose and verse, and it enables experiencing scientific contents through practical, multisensory, interactive and playful activities, from the affective learning perspective. All these projects also aim at contributing to individuals’ overall global development to help building their identity and self-knowledge by developing a critical and aesthetic sense. They also aim at awakening the imagination and triggering reflections about the relationship between the “I” and the other, as well as between the “I” and planet Earth, to improve individuals’ perception about Geology and Paleontology contents observed in everyday life, as well as to promote the conservation of Natural and Cultural Heritage.

PhD in Human Sciences (Anthropology). Degree in Tourism and Social Sciences at Federal University of Rio de Janeiro. Professor at the Tourism and Heritage Department of Federal University of Rio de Janeiro State (UNIRIO) and at the Post-Graduation Program in Social Memory (PPGMS). She develops research on topics such as Tourism, Heritage, Memory and Culture. She coordinates the Unirio Tourism Observatory, which is a project financed by the Ministry of Education (MEC), through the Tutorial Education Program (PET - Programa de Educação Tutorial). She coordinates and participates in research projects funded by Carlos Chagas Research Support Foundation of Rio de Janeiro (FAPERJ -  Fundação Carlos Chagas de Amparo à Pesquisa do Rio de Janeiro) and by the National Research Council (CNPQ - Conselho Nacional de Pesquisa), and she has approved projects in progress through the Public Notice for Applied Social Sciences and Support to Cederj.

Prof_Natascha Krepsky     Natascha Krepsky

Bachelor’s Degree in Microbiology and Immunology (UFRJ), Master’s Degree in Marine Biology (UFF) and PhD in Marine Geology and Geophysics (UFF). She was junior postdoctoral fellowship holder at Eduardo Penna Franca Radioisotope Laboratory, at Carlos Chagas Filho Institute of Biophysics (UFRJ), in 2008. Nowadays, she is Associate Professor at Federal University of Rio de Janeiro State (UNIRIO), where she coordinates the Water Microbiology Laboratory (LACQUA). She has been permanent member of the Post-Graduation Program in Ecotourism and Conservation (PPGEC) since 2016. In 2020, he started working as collaborating professor in the Post-Graduation Program in Neotropical Biodiversity (PPGBIO). Based on her experience in Marine Microbiology, she coordinates the following research lines: “prospecting for biological alternatives focused on environmental remediation” and “overview on the fecal contamination of beaches in Rio de Janeiro City”. She also coordinates the extension projects “Information: science to act” and “LACQUA in action: good bacteria”, which focus on education as environmental conservation strategy. She helps monitoring the conservation of tourist interest beaches and on developing strategies focused on the environmental remediation of marine environments.

Degree in Biological Sciences (Marine Biology Modality) at Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (1993), Master’s Degree in Ecology at Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (1996) and PhD in Biological Sciences - Universidad de la Republica (2004). He was Director of the Research Department at Federal University of Rio de Janeiro State (UNIRIO) from 2004 to 2011; the Ethics Committee of UNIRIO from 2005 to 2009, the Science without Borders Program of UNIRIO from 2012 to June 2016 and he was Dean of Post-Graduation Studies and Research at UNIRIO from 2011 to May 2015. Nowadays, he is Associate Professor (level 3) at Federal University of Rio de Janeiro State (UNIRIO) and Vice-Rector of UNIRIO. He holds a CNPq PQ2 Scientific Productivity Scholarship since 2014. He is member of the group of Founding Professors of the Post-Graduation Programs in Neotropical Biodiversity (level 4) and in Ecotourism and Conservation (level 4), both at Federal University of Rio de Janeiro State (UNIRIO). He held a Young Scientist Scholarship from Rio de Janeiro State (JCNE-FAPERJ) throughout the 2013-2015 triennium. He is the author of children’s books belonging to the “Bichos da Praia” collection by Editora Instituto Ciência Hoje. Prof_Richieri Antônio Sartori     Richieri Antônio Sartori 

Adjunct Professor in the Biological Sciences course at Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro (PUC-RIO). He holds Degree in Biological Sciences at Federal University of Lavras (2007), Master’s Degree in Applied Ecology at the same university, and PhD in Botany/Diversity, with emphasis on environmental restoration, at National School of Tropical Botany / Botanical Garden of Rio de Janeiro, in partnership (sandwich doctorate) with University of Puerto Rico. He teaches classes in fields such as Recovery of Degraded Areas, basic and applied statistics, statistics using R software, botany and ecology. He teaches courses in fields such as environmental restoration, identification of tree families in the Atlantic Forest and seedling production. He also has experience in providing environmental consultancy for plantation licensing, monitoring and implementation processes.

Prof_Rodrigo Machado Vilani     Rodrigo Machado Vilani

Post-graduation in Ecotourism and Conservation. He holds Major Degree in Biological Sciences at Federal University of Juiz de Fora (2000) and Bachelor’s Degree in Law (2003). He holds Master’s Degree in Law (2006), PhD in Environment (2010) at University of Rio de Janeiro State. His post-doctorate studies were carried out in the Biodiversity and Health Program of Oswaldo Cruz Foundation (2014). He coordinated the Post-Graduation Program in Ecotourism and Conservation (2017-2020). He was research productivity researcher at UNIRIO 2017/2018 (PQ-UNIRIO Public Notice 01/2017). From June 2012 to June 2018, he worked as Editor-in-Chief of “Boletim Petróleo, Royalties e Região”. He leads the ‘Ecotourism and Development’ Research Group. From an interdisciplinary perspective, he works in the Ecotourism, Urban and Regional Planning, and Environmental Law fields, mainly in the analysis of nature conservation policies.

 Prof_Áthila Bertoncini Andrade     Áthila Bertoncini Andrade

Oceanographer (UNIVALI, 2000) with Master’s Degree in Biological Sciences (Zoology) at Federal University of Paraíba (2003) and PhD in Ecology and Natural Resources at Federal University of São Carlos (2009). He published 27 articles in specialized journals and 34 articles in event annals. He published the book titled “Peixes de Costão Rochoso de Santa Catarina” [Fish from the Rocky Coast of Santa Catarina State]. He participated in 8 and 3 events in Brazil and abroad, respectively. He coordinated 6 research projects, in total, in the last 10 years. He is currently participating in 4 research projects; 2 of them are coordinated by him. He works in the Ecology and Zoology field, with emphasis on fish from coral and rocky reefs, marine protected areas and endangered species. He uses underwater photography and video recordings as working tool in Scientific Diving. He interacted with 111 collaborators, in the co-authorship of scientific studies, in his professional activities. Biologist with Bachelor’s Degree in Ecology (UFRJ), Master’s Degree in Environmental Planning (Coppe/UFRJ) and PhD in Community Psychosociology and Social Ecology (Eicos/UFRJ). Collaborating professor in the Post-Graduation Programs in Ecotourism and Conservation at UNIRIO, Territorial Development at UERJ, and Biodiversity in Conservation Units at National School of Tropical Botany/JBRJ, as well as in the undergraduate course in Theology at Franciscan Theological Institute. Instructor at the National Academy of Biodiversity (AADEBio). Member of the Technical Advisory Group of the National Action Plan for Mangrove Conservation. In his professional career, he was head of EPA Guapimirim and chairman of the board of the Council “Mosaic of CUs in Central Rio de Janeiro State’s Atlantic Forest”. He has academic and professional interests in fields such as protected area management, social ecology, political ecology, social participation, socio-environmental public policies, environmental education, ecotourism and ecotheology.

Associate professor (level 1) of the Public Health Nursing Department at Alfredo Pinto School of Nursing-UNIRIO; collaborating professor at UNIRIO’s Post-Graduation Program in Ecotourism and Conservation. PhD in Sciences and Master’ Degree in Nursing at UNIRIO. Permaculturist at UFSC/UFV and Designer in sustainability (Gaia Education). Co-founding member of “Redes Raízes RJ” [RJ Roots Network], Rio de Janeiro State Network of Folk Healers, Herbalists, Woodsmen and Shamans, and Brazilian Network of Permaculture Centers and Studies (Neperma Network - Brazil). Specialization in Environmental Analysis and Assessment at PUC-Rio. Master’s Degree and PhD in Environmental Sciences at State University of Maringá (NUPELIA). Professor at UNIRIO’s undergraduate courses in fields such as Environmental Impacts and Geographic Information Systems. She has training in the following fields: Ecohydrology (University of Algarve), Ecological Modeling, Geoprocessing, Map Algebra, and Remote Sensing applied to topics, such as toxic algae blooms and oil spills. Her research applies to Ecology, GIS and Environmental Impact Assessment. Her studies focus on forest fragmentation and loss; land use and cover; impacts on aquatic environments; flooding processes and impacts on Conservation Units. She coordinates the Environmental Impact Assessment Laboratory (LAVIAUNIRIO). Her research mainly uses free and open access software, as well as Google Earth Engine platform.
