Areas of Concentration and Research Lines

Description of the Research Areas in the Postgraduate Program in Music at UNIRIO

The Master's and Doctorate courses are comprised of four areas of concentration and five lines of research: Musicology (Ethnography of Musical Practices Line; Documentation Line and History of Music Line), Composition (Creative Processes in Music Line), Interpretative Practices (Theory and Practice of Interpretation in Music Line) and Music and Education (Teaching and Learning in Music Line).

Ethnography of Musical Practices Line

Ethnographic study and research of musical representations and practices, reflecting on the multiple interactions between music-making and its conditions of production, transmission, and reception. This postgraduate program aims to foster professional practice in various fields—notably the artistic, educational, and public policymaking fields—and addresses contemporary artistic, scientific, and social challenges. It prioritizes interdisciplinary approaches that integrate the dimensions of social participation, impact, and innovation open to music-making, and foster dialogue with similar experiences in other countries and geopolitical contexts. This program encompasses a diversity of study subjects, united by the ethnographic method.

Documentation and Music History Line

Study and research of musical practices from a historical perspective: texts, styles, processes, products, and protagonists.

Treatment of documentary sources for Brazilian music: identification, description, analysis, criticism, editing, and availability. Currently, the line emphasizes research focused on collections belonging to public and private institutions based in the state of Rio de Janeiro, such as: Vera Janacopulos/Unirio, FUNARTE Documentation Center, Pedro II School, Rio de Janeiro State Musicians' Union, Paulo Moura Collection, among others.

Music Teaching and Learning Track

The track's specific areas of interest include:

- research related to basic education;

- curricula in music education;

- professional and artistic pedagogical practices;

- listening didactics;

- creation in educational practices;

- pedagogy of Brazilian urban popular singing;

- music education and (auto)biographies;

- historical and philosophical focus on teaching, learning, and music processes;

- interactions between neuroscience and music

Creative Processes in Music Line

This line of research opens up opportunities for research in musical composition (instrumental, vocal, and electroacoustic); improvisation; arrangement; sound; the relationship between sound and performance; the relationship between sound and visual image; and related areas of study with a focus on artistic production. Its main characteristic is its interdisciplinary relationship with fields such as cinema, visual arts, computer science, theater, literature, recording/mixing/mastering, philosophy, sociology, and history, aiming to produce mixed research in these areas, that is, the production of dissertations or theses and artistic production (concerts, exhibitions, installations, audiovisual performances, radio production, production for the internet, among others). It aims to address any and all forms of sound production in any recording/production medium, following the perspectives emerging in recent decades in the national and international arenas. It also aims to conduct more speculative research in these same areas, where an artistic product is not necessarily achieved.
